I agree with the previous comment, a bit of research on the Net before buying a car, which for most people is their second biggest purchase of their lives, costs nothing, yet can save so much misery in the long run.

    The Passat rides and handles well and has the interior ambience of a much costlier car. Cargo capacity is exceptionally generous. Competent braking, trusty emergency handling, and up-to-date safety equipment round out the package.

    The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle. Heater replaced Heater blocked from deposits from cooling system. Radiator replaced despite meticulous maintenance. Systemic problem which VW recognises but will not fix. I had it treated once at a dealer to try to flush out some of the stuff, and that helped for about a year.

    I am not sure if it is the dealer who does the work, or the sensors themselves. I suspect the sensors. They are incredibly liable to failure Antilock system ABS , parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear. I took it to my auto mechanic who said the brakes are fine, but there is likely a sensor problem and to take it to a dealer to see what they say.

    After the first time, we reduced the amount of breaking by downshifting. However, when my daughter began driving this car a few years ago, and was not adept at downshifting, we once again had to replace the rotors.

    Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks. A bump on the curb resulted in the entire pan giving way and all the oil leaking out. Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, leaks. Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage includes rack and pinion , power steering pumps and hoses, leaks , wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension. Should have done it when the car was new as it was always under-sprung.

    Power or manual windows, locks and latches, tailgate, hatch or trunk, doors or sliding doors, mirrors, seat controls, safety belts, sunroof, convertible top. Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure. Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

    I think I contributed to this problem by significantly over reving the engine about 5 yrs ago. Radiator, cooling fan, antifreeze leaks, water pump, thermostat, overheating. Paint fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling , loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust. Cruise control, clock, warning lights, body control module, keyless entry, wiper motor or washer, tire pressure monitor, interior or exterior lights, horn, gauges, 12V power plug, remote engine start, alarm or security system.
