    I'm not completely sold on the new Lexus spindle grille, particularly applied to the funky aero face of the new Lexus GS But damn if there isn't a good car behind it. I spent my evening in the GS about a week after driving the all-new Lexus ES , so it was an interesting juxtaposition between the company's front-wheel-drive and rear-wheel drive philosophies.

    Not surprisingly, I much prefer the rear-drive -- granted, with AWD -- biased vehicle. Lexus has finally added some personality to the inside of the GS with material textures and stitching; you won't mistake it for a Bentley, but it contains shapes and surfaces that your hand wants to touch versus the monolithic smoothness that's marked some of the brand's previous attempts.

    A less pleasant surprise was the weird hump intruding on the driver's right-side footwell. Likely clearing the AWD transfer case, it sticks a full four inches into the footwell -- the weird thing is you don't notice it until the back of your knee touches it, after which you're compelled to incessantly wonder why it's there. That setting allows the transmission to hold gears longer and tightens up the throttle response.

    The reflexes aren't quite on par with a BMW 5-series, but the structure and responsiveness are superior to those of a Mercedes-Benz E-class. Lexus still hasn't quite exorcised the sense that the driving experience has been filtered through some sort of analog-to-digital processor, rendering everything just a touch too perfect, leaving the driver wondering what's hiding between the resulting ones and zeros. That's where the passion and the character tend to exist.

    As for me, I love the sound of a good vinyl LP. But the imperfect, convenient MP3 is what I tend to enjoy every day. Likewise, I would have no complaints about daily commuting behind the wheel of a GS, as long as I was able to enjoy the pops and crackles of a nice Lotus Elan or Porsche Carrera when time allowed. I'm torn on this car. I love it for its ripping V6 that emulates a small V8 in power, but seems as refined as a BMW inline six-cylinder, for its quiet and well-crafted interior, and for its laudable mix of isolated, smooth ride quality and sporty handling character.

    But like Andy, I'm still feeling disconnected from the road and the mechanicals, so much so that it's hard to really tell with certainty what's happening out there at pavement level. This GS is better than past Lexus vehicles in that respect -- I do actually feel some of the road imperfections transmitted through the chassis to the driver's seat and steering wheel, and the brakes are spectacular -- but it's still a pretty sensory-deprived cockpit.

    Because of that, there's fairly noticeable body roll and lean before the driver really grasps that a major weight transfer has occurred, which could lead to unwittingly and seriously overtaxing the car's grip.

    I also noted what I thought was out-of-character chassis shaking for a car with such seemingly rock-solid build quality. The good news is that luxury customers buying Lexuses usually aren't the kind of people who are hammering around corners or worrying about suspension stiffness.

    They'll likely be perfectly content cruising along in their cocoon of silence or being entertained by the car's seriously strong audio system. Everything inside is top-notch and clean, with the giant All that helps clean up the center stack, but the sort-of haptic-response controller for those embedded functions still needs work to make it easier to manage various systems while driving.
