  • The gearbox has always been a little noisy but it is slowly starting to get louder, Since having it done i took it to a toyota dealership for another.

I own a 06 sr d4d manual and my gearbox whines in 1st 2nd 3rd and i had a slight whine from near new, toyota denied it, by 80,klms is.

Ever since I have had my van she has had what sounds like a gearbox noise in 4th gear only from about rpmrpm and this only.

Quote Fri May 02, 8: They were however unable to identify the problem. He said they have had some through with issues and had been able to get Toyota to accept a warranty claim, he didn't go into alot of detail but was referring to bearing replacements in both the gearbox and transfer. So, I suppose it could be worn imput shaft gear, and corresponding layshaft gear, or maybe thrust washers worn allowing the shafts to move lengthwise and run the teeth slightly out of alignment.

Gearbox Noise - Hilux 4x4 Forum

Sounds more like the gearbox. The hilux gears are pretty small and crap. It'd only be the transfer if it was in 4wd tonkalux85 the 80 series are full time so they drive through the transfer all the time the luxes are a bit different i do agree with the pinion angle it doesn't look quite right If it was me i'd be pulling the gearbox out and having a look at it, i'd me more suspect on the main drive gears there pretty weak and a common fault on the hilux drivetrain.

But i still don't t think this will be a transfer issue. Thanks for the input guys. I just put another gearbox in the car but it's still doing the exact same thing??? Try rotating your diff so its not on massive angles, had the same noise with my old lux on the front but not as loud as yours.

Hahaha mine was making that same sound! Then I found out my front driver side wheel was was locked in.. Iv just been doing some reading on the net about drive line angles and there are some very useful and educated articles about it, they also talked about shims or wedges and all that stuff. Its a little late now but i will check my pinion angles tomorrow and find out if there equal and ill most likely install some wedges during the week as iv read there not to expensive to buy.

Im new to 4x4 so if iv known about pinion angles and castor wedges, they would have been the first thing i would have done. In case there's somebody out there that would like a read, I found this website to be real helpful: Its a long process of setting it all up correctly but in the end its worth it.

I dont think it is a 99 unless its had a sas but it does have a fully set up rear end in it ladder bar, inboard shocks, longer leafs 2 peice is standard but they are shit more uni's more angle and you get more tourqe out of a 1 peice, rigs set up well just needs to iron all the little bugs and you should have alot of fun in it.

I should have done this before too I took the rear tail shaft off today put it in 4wd and drove around with just the front wheels and it dosnt make that sound.

So now im pretty sure its not the gearbox and it has to be the pinion angles. It is a 99 RZN, the previouse owner or owners converted the 99 2wd hilux to 4wd, dont ask me why tho??? HI guys, I just recently bought a 99 Hilux 4x4. I balanced the rear tail shaft and changed the uni joints. I just had a new clutch put in and spigot bearing changed along with a machined flywheel. The previous rear diff was welded locked, so I borrowed a diff off a mate swapped them around and it still does the same thing.
