The styling of the Legacy draws far less attention than that of the STI, which is both good and bad depending on your personal tastes. HID headlights are standard on all models except the base 2. The "D" pillar on the wagon is no longer covered in glass, also ending a design tradition established with the first generation and borrowed from the Subaru XT. The Warm Ivory interior color is only available on vehicles with the "L" package and SI-Cruise models; all other trim levels are available with black interior with black cloth upholstery, with leather offered optionally on the "L" package and SI-Cruise model.

Maybe they need a little more room for a family and want something more comfortable, but they don't want to give up all the performance. There are some luxury elements mixed into the package, such as the moonroof and leather interior trim, but the faux carbon fiber and aluminum pedal set do a little to keep the performance-vehicle vibe in the cabin. Then there is the optional performance group that tosses in a slick shift knob, a short-throw shifter and a boost gauge mounted to the right side of the gauge hood.

I really liked the location of the boost gauge as opposed to an A-pillar-mounted one--it's easy to see while keeping your eyes on the road ahead. And the shift knob combined with the short-throw shifter offered solid shifts. Of course, it's unfair to compare the Legacy engine to the one in the STI that goes to work with 40 hp more, but there is still sufficient motivation from this powerplant.

There is a very brief period of boost lag before it's off to the races, with a good wallop at 2, rpm that stays consistent to redline. As with most Subaru vehicles, steering could use more weight and feedback tuned in, but it's responsive enough.

To be fair, our test vehicle was also wearing winter tires, which hampers the Legacy's reflexes some compared with the summer performance rubber which is stock for the 2.

Still, the car responds well to being tossed around, with some roll in corners, but holds tight and will plow when pushed too far. Ride quality is comfortable with the suspension doing a good job of smoothing out road blemishes, and the Legacy feels solid at expressway speeds.

The brakes are also strong with a pedal that's on the squishy side. There are a couple of things I want to see in the Legacy's future. Second, I hope Subaru continues its interior renaissance that began with the new Impreza.

There's a massive amount of quality, soft-touch surfaces in the new Impreza, and hopefully the next Legacy will follow in its little sibling's footsteps.

But today's Legacy 2. I drove the Subaru Legacy 2. The Legacy is much better equipped in the interior department though some of that is because of our older STI tester. There is a more executive-luxury feel throughout, with the faux-carbon-fiber inlays and gadgetry-adorned dash. While nothing is quite like the nice buckets of the STI, the Legacy's seats are comfortable for the car's intended purpose and appropriately supportive.

There is far less road noise, and the car absorbs the bumps much better. Even though the Legacy is down on power compared with the STI, the car holds its own quite well and still has enough torque and horsepower from its turbocharged H4 to put a smile on your face.
